So. . . .

I agreed to the food stamp challenge, without consulting my family first. *blush* Fortunately, they are pretty good about stuff like this. . . my dd however, is convinced she will starve!

Sure hope there are lots of deals on her favorite things in the next couple of weeks.

Thinking of the food stamp challenge already

taking a sneak peak at a couple of the food ads online for next week (figure I'll be purchasing most of the foods for 19-25, sometime next week).

been perusing my old cookbooks for frugal recipes, and generally just thinking about what we'll do.

Feeding Illinois Hunger challenge

My family is going to do this challenge. We don't generally spend more that the allotted amount anyway, but it will be interesting to actually track it all.

Preparedness - are you prepared?

Make a disaster preparedness kit

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/earthquakes/archive/ready.dtl

After the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 12,000 Bay Area residents found themselves displaced permanently or temporarily. Of those whose homes remained intact, many were temporarily without water, electricity and phone service.

In order to prepare for another such disaster SF Gate has compiled a list of supplies the American Red Cross recommends you keep on hand.
****

WATER | FOOD
FIRST AID | TOOLS, SUPPLIES | SANITATION
CLOTHES, BEDDING | DOCUMENTS

WATER

* Store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles. A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts of water each day. Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount. Children, nursing mothers, and ill people will need more.
* Store one gallon of water per person per day. Don't forget your pets.
* Keep at least a three-day supply of water per person (two quarts for drinking, two quarts for each person in your household for food preparation/sanitation).
* Change this water every six months. Household liquid bleach to kill microorganisms:

o Use only regular household liquid bleach that contains 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite. Do not use scented bleaches, colorsafe bleaches or bleaches with added cleaners.
o Add 16 drops of bleach per gallon of water, stir and let stand for 30 minutes. If the water does not have a slight bleach odor, repeat the dosage and let stand another 15 minutes.
o The only agent used to treat water should be household liquid bleach. Other chemicals, such as iodine or water treatment products sold in camping or surplus stores that do not contain 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite as the only active ingredient, are not recommended and should not be used.

FOOD

* Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits, vegetables.
* Canned juices, milk, soup
* Sugar, salt, pepper
* High energy foods such as peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars, trail mix; foods that will not increase thirst.
* Vitamins
* Foods for infants, elderly, persons with special dietary needs
* Comfort/stress foods: cookies, hard candy, sweetened cereals, lollipops, instant coffee, tea bags.
* Pet food, at least one ounce per animal pound per day.
* Avoid foods like rice, pasta and dry beans that require a great deal of water to prepare. Remember to restock your food once a year.

TGIF!

So glad this week is over, and I'm off work this weekend.

Still dealing with all the financial mess from mom's death, but slowly wading through most of it. I got a small check from her annuity, and they claim it's the last payment. Supposedly her last check would have been the same month she died? ! I find that a little TOO coincidental. Doing some checking up on that one.

In the meantime - I hit a few yard sales tonight, and scored a car seat for Lily to use while she's here, and a potty seat that sits on a regular toilet.

Did a total of 9.25 hours of overtime this pay period *sigh* and my legs are feeling it, but the check will nice next Friday.

So - doing points programs like a fiend (cashing in the swag bucks for Amazon.com GC's), watching the food budget, etc.

Better day today

At least I got off close to on time :) AND Sarah is 1-2 cm dilated and 60% effaced. Gonna be loving up on a new grand daughter real soon!

oy vey!

2 hours of overtime to get my charting finished. . . lots of running, stress and more. My legs are not happy with me tonight. . . so much so, that I skipped Deana's concert.

Sarah says she's having lots of pressure and urge to void. Hmmmm. . . . hoping I get to hold a new grand daughter soon.

Frugal doings- on a Monday

Marty and I took back 2 packs of adult diapers that I'd bought for mom, when she was home for that one week. Meijer's gave us a gift card for the refund - fine by me, as they are having their 10 for $10 sale this week. We used the gift card to stock up some staples.

Used the gift card I got doing surveys to purchase the meat for the funeral dinner tomorrow, so no out of pocket expense for me there, either.

And came home to make dandelion jelly - I managed to pour the hot jelly over my hand, while filling the jars - but otherwise, it looks, smells and tastes great!

Solar Apple Cooker

http://www.reachoutmichigan.org/funexperiments/agesubject/lessons/handouts/solarbake.html

Can also be used to bake a potato, cook small amounts of basically any foods.

Just rethinking of some things I'd done in the past to save $$

Needing to save some major $$$$ here now, so rethinking of the things I used to do.

Hamburger - boil it, instead of fry. . .easier, less messy, less hands on time for me.
Drain and save the water - cool in the fridge, and use the fat for later cooking, the water for soups, etc.

Navy showers - get in, get wet - turn the water off. . . soap up, including your hair. . . then turn water on and rinse. Saves water, and sewer bills if yours includes water usage for the sewer fees.

Baking my own bread - kinda gotten away from this, but it saves money, and is healthier too. I think I'll get a sour dough started tomorrow.

Any other retro ideas, you do?

Whew-

It's been a long week. Extremely busy at work, more so at home. I won a $10 Amazon.com GC for doing a survey, so I put that on the site, to use for Christmas gifts. I need to redeem some of my swagbucks points for Amazon GC's too. Last year I had enough to get Jake's $200 solar powered generator for free!
